  1. The cuckoo of the poem is in fact a hototogisu 
  2. or Little Cuckoo (Cuculus poliocephalus), 
  3. a bird often mentioned in Japanese poetry.  
  4. The cry is very different from that of the 
  5. ordinary cuckoo.  The bird was sometimes 
  6. considered a messenger from the other-world, 
  7. and a harbinger of death.
